It’s about time that this little blog was up and running again! I started
writing this blog 6 years ago and let’s just say I’ve been inconsistent at
blogging about keeping the sparkle in first grade. Starting today, you will be
able to find new content here on Shining and Sparkling in First Grade on a much
more regular basis.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Remember Me?</span><br />
<br />
This will be my 18th (gasp) year of teaching! I taught special education for
8 years and am entering my tenth year of teaching first grade. I love to
add *SPARKLE* and *GLITTER* to EVERYTHING!!!! I also love to be creative and I
can’t wait to share some of my best ideas here with you on my blog. <br />
<br />
At home, I’m a very busy mommy and wife, which is why I’ve taken an unplanned
hiatus from blogging for the last couple of years. I have a son who is 7 and
about to start second grade and a daughter who is 4 going on 14. These two mean
everything to me. My husband and I have been married for 11 years and he is one
of those rare guys who is truly a partner and we share all the
responsibilities. We also have a little dog that we love very much. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: red; font-size: large;">Upcoming Fun!</span><br />

From the very first day of school in my very first year of teaching, I’ve struggled with what to do with my fast finishers. I’ve tried just about everything, but nothing worked well enough to become a routine or an established practice in my classroom. I always felt like I was punishing the students who finished early by giving them something monotonous to do. So, two years ago, I decided enough was enough and I worked to come up with a solution that would challenge my fast finishers and maintain their interest, yet still hold them accountable for their extra learning. <br />
So, after MUCH thought, time, and hard work, I created <strong><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Shining-And-Sparkling-In-First-Grade/Category/Tired-Teacher-Timesaver-Early-Finisher-Packs" target="_blank">Tired Teacher Timesaver Early Finisher Packs</a></strong>. These packs are 20 pages of math and language arts NO PREP printables designed with first graders in mind. The skills reviewed are directly related to the common core and reflect first grade curriculum goals. Each packet was designed with the seasonal themes and holidays occurring each month, with cute graphics to match. I also worked hard to ensure that the skills I reviewed would challenge my students without overwhelming them. I even created a special cover sheet! Click on any of the pictures for a closer look.<br />

Every month I have the packets copied front/back and stapled in packets with the cover sheet. Then, I hand these packs out as students finish their work early. The students keep these packets in their desks to pull out and work on when they have a few minutes to spare. These are not packets the students can just breeze through. Each page often involves multiple steps. I make a big deal and celebrate the students who complete the packets. <br />
The skills become progressively more challenging as the school year progresses. The pack for August is basically a kindergarten review, while July’s packet is an end of first grade review. Here’s a look at a few of the pages you’ll find in these packs. Click on any of the pictures to view the entire packet.<br />

How about a Christmas coupon book? <br />
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5cB2jWmtsn9cXdtYkhxUjE5VUU/view?usp=sharing"><img alt="042" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcUNfOH8XTGOHgjCeEKJy-eQ7QEVLds5nMJXcpO0JmfyGibWvIlnf-PrvQdNwZvVV6PKdQ7wT7slN52ea_DR7mWXrtuU6nNQzat2g95FLKyxNsUtg3aJoOy0Qx3blnZIiUrrkl0IjfuyLq/?imgmax=800" height="358" style="background-image: none; border: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="042" width="560" /></a><br />
Last year I gave these out and my students LOVED redeeming them throughout the rest of the school year. It was really cute to see who spent them all in the first week and who saved them right up until the end of the school year. Those coupons sure did burn a whole in the pocket of some of my students. <br />
This book of coupons is completely free and you’ll only have to print, cut, and staple to prepare your booklet. The following five coupons along with a cover page are included:<br />
<ul>
<li>No homework pass</li>
<li>20 Minutes free computer time</li>
<li>Eat lunch with your teacher</li>
<li>Switch seats with a friend for the day</li>
<li>Bring a stuffed animal to school</li>
</ul>
I have updated the coupons with an expiration date of "last day of school" and I have changed my name to “your teacher.” The pictures shown are from last year, since I’m currently on maternity leave and won’t be seeing my students this Christmas. Tomorrow is Cyber Monday and I know I’ll be glued to my computer/phone/tablet trying to snag some good deals. Did you hear that Teachers Pay Teachers is having a Cyber Monday & Tuesday sale? All day Monday 12-2 and Tuesday 12-3, you can save up to 28% off every item in my store! Woo hoo! Be sure to enter the promo code CYBER at checkout to receive the full 28% discount! Click on the picture below to head to my store.</p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Shining-And-Sparkling-In-First-Grade"><img title="Cyber Monday Sale Button_3_Creative Clips" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="Cyber Monday Sale Button_3_Creative Clips" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-lxcd9Njf_iA/Upu2NXx5HmI/AAAAAAAABOs/8uKLvWt23Hg/Cyber%252520Monday%252520Sale%252520Button_3_Creative%252520Clips%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="431" height="333"></a> </p> <p>Just added to my store is a resource I’ve been working on for my classroom for quite a while. I’ve created a student dictionary for my students to keep in their desks to use as a spelling helper. They use this dictionary when they write and they add to it as new words are introduced in class. Anytime I introduce new spelling words or word wall words, the students highlight them or write them in their dictionaries. Included in this book are the first 300 Fry words and the first 220 Dolch words. Click the picture below to check it out!</p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Student-Dictionary-999256"><img title="1" style="float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto" alt="1" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW1OT0ptT0JuvJU72FjANvl17P8a5X65OUcrdN1tajQi2c2qX1rVfx1nVq0u19uguVWi1L1OIgRZ81o2VErbOUUHiyLWkvRzn4osZlVFj6Xv_eIf3dZKii5mE3BdsFLNVU89FFvWk9buRK/?imgmax=800" width="325" height="433"></a></p> <p>And I’ve saved the best for last! I gave birth to my precious baby girl three weeks ago! She is absolutely perfect and I’ve been enjoying my time at home with her and her brother. So, if you’ve been wondering where I’ve been for the last nine months, the answer is “pregnant.” Now I’m just loving every second I get with my sweet family. </p> mollymm77http://www.blogger.com/profile/10749476287356508026noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2002713693103054698.post-1840108009662009702013-08-17T08:01:00.001-07:002013-08-17T11:14:09.072-07:00Back to School Sale<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Shining-And-Sparkling-In-First-Grade"><img alt="TpT_BackToSchoolSale1_2013" border="0" height="262" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-1umj3BaulTE/Ug-QQ0-WWHI/AAAAAAAABNY/WNvv7NO91W0/TpTBackToSchoolSaleBlogIconGraphicClipartFREE%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="TpT_BackToSchoolSale1_2013" width="401" /></a><br />

So, it feels like months ago, but recently I was nominated by two different bloggers for the Liebster Award. I figured this was the perfect way to help you get to know me a little better. Vanessa from <a href="http://theeducatedcrown.blogspot.com/">The Educated Crown</a> nominated me, so thank-you, Vanessa!!! I was also nominated for this award by Caitlin from <a href="http://alwayssunnyinawindowlessclassroom.blogspot.com/">Always Sunny in First</a>. Thank-you, Caitlin! Click on their links to check out their cute blogs. <br />
According to Vanessa’s blog, The Liebster Award is defined this way:<br />
<div align="center">
<b>Liebster is German and means "dearest," "lovely," "cute," "beloved," and "welcome". What a great word! Since blogging is about creating community, this award is a fabulous way to spread the word about new blogs.</b></div>
To accept this award I must do the following: <br />
1. Link back to the blogs that nominated me <br />
2. Nominate 5-11 blogs with fewer than 200 followers <br />
3. Answer the questions posted for you by your nominator <br />
4. Share 11 random facts about yourself <br />
5. Create 11 questions for your nominees- my nominees can answer the same questions I did. <br />
6. Contact your nominees and let them know you nominated them <br />
Here are the 11 questions presented to me by Vanessa at The Educated Crown. <br />
<b>1. What grade do you teach? Is this your favorite? </b>I teach first grade. Yes, it is my absolute favorite. I love the age of my students and their sweet personalities, I love the curriculum, and I could not imagine teaching any other grade. <br />
2. <strong>What's your favorite season? </strong>Without a doubt, it’s the fall/back to school season. There’s something about seeing high school football practice outside my classroom window that just puts me in the fall mood. I love the temperature of the air in fall, the changing color of the leaves, everything pumpkin (especially food<img alt="Smile" class="wlEmoticon wlEmoticon-smile" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-m-AxJgb0hB8/UggvpV_pmAI/AAAAAAAABMw/8cxzChjFIEY/wlEmoticon-smile%25255B2%25255D.png?imgmax=800" />), and the many festivals and markets that pop up in the fall season.<br />
3. <b>What is your favorite sweet concoction? </b>I just LOVE New York cheesecake. Sometimes with strawberries or cherries, but usually plain. I also LOVE Diet Coke with cherry syrup, like the kind from Sonic. Yum! <br />
<b>4. Do you have children? </b>Yes! My son turned two in February and he is the apple of my eye! Every day I am amazed by the smart things he says or remembers, like finding octagons when we go on walks! We are also expecting a little girl this fall!! <b></b><br />
<b>5. Do I have any pets? </b>Yes, our first “child” was our dog, Mr. Pooker Boo. He’s a poodle mix. He is 7 years old and was our only “baby” for five years. He’s adjusted well to the role of big brother and now lives a life more like a dog, but he’s still pretty spoiled. <br />
6. <strong>What is your favorite subject to teach? </strong>Definitely math! Even though I have my master’s degree as a reading specialist, I really enjoy teaching math. I love moving from point a to point b with my firsties and making it fun and meaningful along the way. <br />
7. <b>What is your favorite TV show? </b>Breaking Bad, which starts tonight!!!! I also like Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, Modern Family, and Parks & Rec. <strong></strong><br />
<strong>8. If you weren't a teacher, what career path might you have chosen? </strong>Nursing. My husband was seriously ill many years ago, which really interested me in medicine. For much of that time, I was his nurse at home. That experience taught us both so much, but most of all it taught us to appreciate every single second we have and not to take anything for granted. The fact that we are now able to have children and raise a family is honestly something we at one time were sure we’d never get to experience. <br />
9. <b>Do you use a MAC or PC? </b>I use a PC. <br />
10. <b>5. How do you relax? </b>What? Relax? This does not happen with a two year old. I do however, fall asleep from exhaustion on the couch most nights! Lol! <br />
11. <strong>If you could learn something new, what would it be? </strong>I would absolutely love to get a “good” camera and really learn how to use it. I am terrible at taking pictures. <br />
<div align="center">
<div style="text-align: center;">

I know I’ve been absolutely MIA from this blog for a few months! To make it up to you, I’ve just uploaded a brand new freebie to start the new school year. This is a math center that focuses on patterning. Use the pretty cover sheet and student directions to display at your center. There’s even a recording sheet included to hold your new firsties accountable for their work. </p> <p>Click the picture to download.</p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-Patterning-FREEBIE-801425"><img title="image" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="image" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-44IDuMGmczQ/UfubbaSgCfI/AAAAAAAABMg/sbYRHr5xZ10/image%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="465" height="371"></a></p> <p>We’ve had quite a bit of excitement for the last few months! I have exciting news to share! I’m expecting a baby girl this fall!!!! And…we moved into the house of our dreams last week! Woo hoo!!!! It’s been a rough road getting to this point and it certainly looked like it could all fall apart quite a few times, but here we are and we couldn’t be happier! I hope that helps to explain why I’ve not been blogging for a while! </p> <p>Since yesterday was the first day of August, the official “back to school month,” I went into my classroom to work all day yesterday. I mainly spent my time purging all the junk I’ve accumulated over the last 12 years (gasp!). I have SO much more to do before school starts! I’ll post pictures as soon as things start to look presentable. Enjoy the freebie!</p> mollymm77http://www.blogger.com/profile/10749476287356508026noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2002713693103054698.post-44773956698361406962013-06-30T16:52:00.002-07:002013-06-30T16:52:35.595-07:00Hello bloglovin’!In case you haven’t heard, today is Google Reader’s last day. <br />
And I PROMISE to be a better blogger really, really soon! Life has been VERY hectic at our house with a move and a new baby on the way. Blogging, Teachers Pay Teachers, and other school-related happenings have been on the back burner for a few months, but I plan on being back and better than ever before too long!<br />
mollymm77http://www.blogger.com/profile/10749476287356508026noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2002713693103054698.post-2685435659502378882013-04-01T03:39:00.001-07:002013-04-01T04:48:10.239-07:00A Brand New Freebie for You (No foolin!)No, this is not an April Fools joke. I’ve created a great freebie for you to start the month of April. Hopefully this will help those of you who are suffering through spring break withdrawal. This is my last day of break, although we only had off Friday and today, so it’s more like a long weekend. I can’t believe the spring break some of you get. This girl is JEALOUS!<br />
<a href="http://freebie-licious.blogspot.com/"><img border="0" height="122" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XnoAPtuRJXw/UQyT2qrka9I/AAAAAAAADrM/3-c-ADf-bgQ/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-11-28+at+10.08.52+PM.png" style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" width="162" /></a><br />
Onto the freebie. When I looked at my students’ most recent MAP test results and also as I discussed their report cards at my most recent set of parent-teacher conferences, I noticed a recurring theme: We need to work on computation. It seems that as we’ve gotten into other math skills, such as money, tens and ones, etc. I haven’t been reviewing addition and subtraction enough. So, this teacher is making a change. I’m finding addition and subtraction worksheets, centers, and games wherever I can to help my students review these skills.<br />
Of course I wasn’t completely satisfied with what I found, so I created this freebie to use at my math center and I wanted to share it with all of you! <br />
<a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5cB2jWmtsn9WmpQdGh6VVBtR1k/edit?usp=sharing"><img alt="image" border="0" height="335" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Lka_HBvUi44/UVljx3iOv2I/AAAAAAAABLk/ZCXvdxWpSh0/image%25255B5%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="422" /></a><br />
You can click on the picture to get from google docs. It is also available in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/After-the-Rain-Addition-Center-Freebie">TpT store</a>.<br />

From 19 parent-teacher conferences in one day to cooking pancakes for my students, we did a lot of learning and had a lot of fun too. </p> <p><a href="http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2013/03/five-for-friday-linky-party-march-8th.html"><img style="display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto" title="fiveforfriday" border="0" alt="fiveforfriday" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-9IgZwqtFFzQ/UToHrHSLfmI/AAAAAAAARtQ/6MsA-FcXrVY/fiveforfriday_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="235" height="196"></a></p> <p>1. Swooning over spoons! This week our phonics skill was the oo sound like in the word spoon. So, we made this adorable anchor chart. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-5RiUdaoAkTA/UUPBBKfn03I/AAAAAAAABIU/_3s76St-sdg/s1600-h/0235.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="023" border="0" alt="023" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-IUj8Cr8rmeA/UUPBBoOuDeI/AAAAAAAABIc/d0y9okfyOxQ/023_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="560" height="439"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-0W1WuBIck80/UUPBB5zNOlI/AAAAAAAABIk/6xJQgtlewAc/s1600-h/0245.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="024" border="0" alt="024" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qp99yRrgJYc/UUPBCEaYz9I/AAAAAAAABIs/gaRro8MB590/024_thumb2.jpg?imgmax=800" width="334" height="453"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-RZP1HRXWT8s/UUPBChYFnBI/AAAAAAAABI0/JOJp41rmSUc/s1600-h/0283.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="028" border="0" alt="028" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-YKVdE6_BjWU/UUPBC-kQMdI/AAAAAAAABI8/JToP9H85Tnw/028_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="184"></a></p> <p>I wrote on plastic spoons with a black Sharpie, then taped them to chart paper. Easy-peasy!</p> <p>2. We held Traffic School in our classroom. An important concept of print is interpreting environmental print. The MAP test we take has a bit of a focus on street signs. So off to traffic school we went!</p> <p> <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-7-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="032" border="0" alt="032" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-0l8vFH4_U00/UUPBDLFrARI/AAAAAAAABJE/Eh1QfJles3w/032.jpg?imgmax=800" width="488" height="377"></a></p> <p>I posted 10 traffic signs around the classroom and the students used clip boards to draw pictures of the signs and try to interpret their meanings. </p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-7-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="033" border="0" alt="033" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-6XhbizqZg7o/UUPBDbAOndI/AAAAAAAABJM/75p7N3eOZL0/033.jpg?imgmax=800" width="448" height="608"></a></p> <p>3. Parent-Teacher Conferences</p> <p>Well, no more parent-teacher conferences until next year. I had 19 conferences on Wednesday afternoon/evening. I was sp-ent by the time I got home that night. Lucky for me I only had 2 conferences on Thursday. </p> <p>This is the sign above my classroom windows, that they parents faced as they sat with me at my table. </p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Parent-Teacher-Conferences-A-Kit-to-Help-you-Succeed"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="044" border="0" alt="044" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8e2gOMJ74m0/UUPBD51xoSI/AAAAAAAABJU/8UhPKwsfoS0/044.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="184"></a><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Parent-Teacher-Conferences-A-Kit-to-Help-you-Succeed"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="045" border="0" alt="045" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxhar13jkz8keZPdqfohXICdf-ALdcccUX0bibMEsIjWMV1_rORKfUabdJ6sM0ReG1n1AJ3-sP8LCK_-OzwmKZKirp0PTe7Vwmo8b6hLjdrupXxmHotEIxcpRtwMsWkgwiZzkD4XJatBX1/?imgmax=800" width="244" height="184"></a></p> <p>4. This baby came with our class book order this week! I spent pretty much every bonus point I had on this sweet puppy. Cannot wait to use it!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-W2R7bRPbbnU/UUPBEWftsOI/AAAAAAAABJk/KZH0jzEt1WY/s1600-h/0434.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="043" border="0" alt="043" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0DyEG5fNOo73i0IBMGSghxTUscZYChaUbH2nn9VM-qnORujuS4-AAdIptkHkPMuIgYaAbM0KdYWeDX3ABU6F-673EP6twMRQiu5rKZXGokVzQUqpJWUjZCIcjkXDq_Bj88I0kHHdPFJGI/?imgmax=800" width="474" height="366"></a></p> <p>5. And finally, today I made my first graders pancakes. Our main story this week was If You Give A Pig A Pancake. So, of course we read a recipe so that we are understanding how to read to perform a task. Then I got busy and cooked pancakes for my class. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-nO5WI717MKQ/UUPBFGmzzTI/AAAAAAAABJ0/9dfhbvLq2xw/s1600-h/0474.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="047" border="0" alt="047" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-CSnKAivdbGA/UUPBFg6RO0I/AAAAAAAABJ8/obINQinMlwM/047_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="441" height="341"></a></p> <p>I had some toppings to pretty up our pancakes (cherries, whipped cream, syrup, chocolate chips, and sprinkles). The students were allowed to choose 2 toppings. <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-MUvkXN2DPmw/UUPBF58YwDI/AAAAAAAABKE/EcdBBEE2fqE/s1600-h/0509.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="050" border="0" alt="050" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsdtpD3cHZjvj0S_sBirE5O3V25x6XU0b09lIQgQVlruVO3UjHc3R68yZLuq2gCsVbbuExNac6xsSHVCUrphVA0wL5v4_aGS7LqZrFGV5lQRP2Iz75Xli5KwX-dt2mDDpefUI-0blrLN-5/?imgmax=800" width="450" height="354"></a></p> <p>The students had to complete this paper to write about what they asked for when I gave them a pancake. I’ll compile all their responses into a class book to add to our classroom library.</p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-7-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="35" border="0" alt="35" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-FqXK-hSqVB8/UUPBGpBXcVI/AAAAAAAABKU/J4qM5TGHopI/35.jpg?imgmax=800" width="431" height="347"></a></p> <p>I’m looking forward to next week, when this will be at our pocket chart center!</p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/If-You-Give-a-Student-This-CenterHe-Will-Learn-About-Cause-and-Effect"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="054" border="0" alt="054" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-xNPH7BwHgBQ/UUPBGwhVUZI/AAAAAAAABKc/G6VfDvYqeX4/054.jpg?imgmax=800" width="380" height="294"></a></p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/If-You-Give-a-Student-This-CenterHe-Will-Learn-About-Cause-and-Effect"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="058" border="0" alt="058" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-vhAbg-ACcqM/UUPBHE6jfpI/AAAAAAAABKk/XaimLkTXkHw/058.jpg?imgmax=800" width="372" height="293"></a></p> <p>Enjoy your weekend!</p> mollymm77http://www.blogger.com/profile/10749476287356508026noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2002713693103054698.post-16681601225356063742013-03-08T19:29:00.001-08:002013-03-08T19:30:48.179-08:00Five for FridayWell, it was quite a week! We had a *Snow Day* Wednesday for what was predicted to be over a foot of snow, but what amounted to maybe six inches. The snow was pretty much melted by noon and then it rained for a little while. So I enjoyed an extra day off with my little guy and spent some time working on report cards & drinking lattes.<br />
Speaking of report cards, in my district we do them SIX times a year. Yes, six. I feel like I am constantly doing report cards. We will be handing them out next week at our spring parent teacher conference. And here is the start of my Five for Friday.<br />
<div align="center">

#1---I am so glad I created this Parent-Teacher Conference packet. It has been invaluable in helping me prepare for my conferences. It includes anything and everything you could need for before, during, and after parent-teacher conferences. Click on the picture to check it out in my little store.<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Parent-Teacher-Conferences-A-Kit-to-Help-you-Succeed"><img alt="1" border="0" height="468" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-WaIyM8yAJMI/UTqsbK3PqTI/AAAAAAAABGM/D8vTeS-gr38/1%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="1" width="360" /></a><br />
#2---We made cupcakes and birthday cards to say happy birthday to a certain famous author who has a March birthday. <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-nea8TgVNm28/UTqscz5pmLI/AAAAAAAABGk/YvO3WizVI_4/s1600-h/015.jpg"><img alt="015" border="0" height="326" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnZjRiPQHtRLTFF7aF9Uq4is-RlcwtpWXrHP-zhpRHspCuWbhHkNkBizNib82bXdwIdoa7vwNTVA7Vqq9Gm4hyphenhyphen9j4QulGRflZ9hYq6ZIV9IME5jNf0Qer7sJ4bNZ_93TzvzdWzYKLxd4VG/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="015" width="511" /></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-n3UPGzNXfzI/UTqsdm2QqLI/AAAAAAAABG0/UZ5h5a7k2LY/s1600-h/017.jpg"><img alt="017" border="0" height="693" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-srmXIjopCNc/UTqsdyvRzOI/AAAAAAAABG8/e_gxEO-uY3Q/017_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="017" width="399" /></a><br />
#3---We learned about the long o sounds spelled with oa and ow. Check out our fun anchor chart:<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-rCSoP8JHbc0/UTqseb3wSGI/AAAAAAAABHE/SVS55eUYS4o/s1600-h/0146.jpg"><img alt="014" border="0" height="586" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0OigTSWXVb8/UTqse0NH6rI/AAAAAAAABHM/kbIRbLIILFc/014_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="014" width="338" /></a><br />
My kiddos really loved these two videos as a part of our oa and ow learning. <br />

#4---Our sparkly shamrocks! These were created from an idea featured in an old issue of The Mailbox magazine. It’s a simple craft using small paper plates, gold glitter, green paint, and a craft stick. I’m planning on “planting” them in green floral foam next week to display during parent-teacher conferences.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_Polt3ycbiqiOk05wjfP3plZ1hEBM926D2waegg51mThkPH1oYSKUS0lw3wo1FDIsovyelyu79ugyJkvDX0pvRW1RJ_c85IDvW6yWrCCstSSMA0MAA_e1S7EK7uBWfC8VqFCopOJiuj42/s1600-h/0189.jpg"><img alt="018" border="0" height="342" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-PEqHRWp879s/UTqsgC3tcII/AAAAAAAABHs/vmwZ_3h3Am8/018_thumb7.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="018" width="537" /></a><br />

So, we are still in Valentine candy leftover land in my classroom. After our party, we had sooooo many leftover conversation hearts, with no real plan for their use. At our party last week, we did the old favorites: we estimated how many will fit into a large heart and graphed how many of each color were in our bag.<br />
<div align="center">
<a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5cB2jWmtsn9ZmU3RkNCUU5jcmM/edit?usp=sharing"><img alt="026" border="0" height="306" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-vxmYOWdJKe0/USbT6hOMGPI/AAAAAAAABEs/fk3mJNT7Hk8/026%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="026" width="491" /></a></div>
But there were bags and bags of these suckers left and these little hearts were really starting to bug me. I just couldn’t decide what to do with them, until….Voila! It hit me! <br />
<a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5cB2jWmtsn9ZmU3RkNCUU5jcmM/edit?usp=sharing"><img alt="028" border="0" height="318" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-uPLC1bvQDe8/USbT7fpgWwI/AAAAAAAABE0/GEhT7-B56wg/028%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="028" width="509" /></a><br />
I gave each student a bag of hearts and their assignment was to read the fun messages on the hearts and find two nouns, two verbs, and two adjectives. They L*O*V*E*D this activity. There was giggling all around as hearts with phrases like, “Shake it,” and “Let’s Boogie,” were read. <br />

<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-5su1ABp7-_E/USbVcOggscI/AAAAAAAABFo/Fz5atbcUbR8/s1600-h/021%25255B12%25255D.jpg"><img alt="021" border="0" height="292" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-jOhDxblBN1o/USbVc4eOv3I/AAAAAAAABFw/xENRzg4KyAk/021_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="021" width="459" /></a><br />
This activity was part of a week spent learning about adjectives. Yesterday, we watched this School House Rocks video on You Tube about adjectives and I still can’t get this song out of my head. My kiddos are humming it constantly too!<br />
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkuuZEey_bs"><img alt="School House Rocks Adjectives" border="0" height="304" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-D_MPtVzaOXU/USbT790sOvI/AAAAAAAABE8/gCgsIs0LlAM/School%252520House%252520Rocks%252520Adjectives%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="School House Rocks Adjectives" width="481" /></a><br />
Then I gave each student a word card with an adjective written on it. I gave out words like cold, fuzzy, clean, fancy, etc. and the students had to put it with something in the room that could be described by their adjective. Again, they L*O*V*E*D it. One student left her vest on her desk, which was subsequently labeled with the words soft, plain, and smooth. Another student had her desk labeled as clean and her water bottle labeled as fancy. And here’s the best part...today when we discussed this activity from yesterday, every.single.student remembered their adjective and the noun it described! LOVE those moments! I have definitely added all of these activities to my bag of tricks when teaching about adjectives.<br />

These last few weeks have been so hectic for me. I’ve wanted to post about a thousand times for a thousand reasons, but tonight is one little post with only two little things to share with you.</p> <p>First of all, this week we learned about the long i sound. I LOVE to introduce long i by turning it into a lesson about *junk food,* my favorite of all the food groups! </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-jC10YsShlnc/UQ28eHUxU2I/AAAAAAAABDI/A6qa3nJy59M/s1600-h/021%25255B19%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="021" border="0" alt="021" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wYTKurctaTA/UQ28eion8tI/AAAAAAAABDQ/Q6MQhHPsF44/021_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="455" height="284"></a></p> <p>I gave my students a set of words, some French fries, some chips, a fry holder, and a chip bag. </p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-5-Home-Sweet-Home-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="013" border="0" alt="013" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-M199QYJbMu8/UQ28fME9vxI/AAAAAAAABDY/bi0vM6y7iA8/013%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="148"></a><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-5-Home-Sweet-Home-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="014" border="0" alt="014" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-uezKAadHR6A/UQ28fxXCnlI/AAAAAAAABDg/Wf1o_MvIJlM/014%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="148"></a></p> <p>The students cut out all the pieces and glued the long i words on French fries and the short i words on chips. </p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-5-Home-Sweet-Home-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="010" border="0" alt="010" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-7U9eIr_rP-Q/UQ28gBgHoGI/AAAAAAAABDo/wAo_G1BwhfY/010%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="148" height="249"></a><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/First-Grade-HM-Theme-5-Home-Sweet-Home-Resource-Pack"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="012" border="0" alt="012" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-RyO792lCXMY/UQ28gTzUxXI/AAAAAAAABDw/R0mO59rmwyY/012%25255B5%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="351" height="219"></a></p> <p>Then they sorted their fries and chips into the correct bags. Tuesday was the 90th day of school, which is officially halfway through the school year. Hooray! To celebrate, we had Halfway Day in our little classroom all day long. I started this celebration last year and my littles just L*O*V*E*D it (~their teacher did too~). This will definitely be a celebration I continue throughout the ~many~ years I have ahead in my career. </p> <p>Here’s the banner that greeted my firsties, and lots of surprised, too tall adults, on Tuesday.</p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2ccBOqCR8HKpwnSBRZqqVw3B3Aqvw8Riea6pkbfNr8GZF0VvCNANILQiaCktaXCynGJAIDK5xnsgagY-Fkn1czW6pmoH91v3p0-x8f6Yfun1V5C9IYDww-lJXP9VigJ85H6MmjQkGHv4U/s1600-h/035%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="035" border="0" alt="035" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-SeZWhBu53Qg/UQQgkMRqvfI/AAAAAAAABCI/6sPs2oLQXxU/035_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="502" height="317"></a></p> <p>The previous week, I sent a letter home asking parents to help their students create a project for halfway day that shows the concept of one-half. This year’s projects were great. Some of our projects included half of a hard boiled egg, half of a bar of soap (the box it came in was cut in half too:), half of a baseball, half decorated cupcakes, etc. The students had to complete a questionaire about their project as part of the assignment. </p> <p>Once we were proudly displaying our projects, we had a gallery walk and chose our favorites and asked questions of their creators. We did lots of other halfway day activities too. We planned and carried out a design for half of a decorated cupcake and half of a cup of juice. We read books about one-half. We completed a fun center called, “Will that be Pick-up or Delivery?” which as you can guess was all about pizza. </p> <p>You can check out all of these activities and more in my new packet. Just click the picture below to check it out.</p> <p><a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Hip-Hip-Hooray-Its-Halfway-Day"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="1" border="0" alt="1" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-mFmlA_oZAQs/UQQgkrx_PfI/AAAAAAAABCQ/s4VM3Qmrijk/1%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="351" height="461"></a> </p> <p>Now it’s only 7 more school days until we celebrate again for the 100th day! Wow! It may seem like a lot of days full of fun (also educational) activities, but during the long, cold, snowy months of January and February, sometimes we need a little nudge to get us out of bed and excited about school in the morning! </p> mollymm77http://www.blogger.com/profile/10749476287356508026noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2002713693103054698.post-36691932666733133442013-01-14T17:58:00.001-08:002013-01-14T17:58:43.350-08:00Meeting my Goals & Improving Positive Parent Communication<p>I have to start by shouting from the rooftops that I am feeling so organized thanks to the changes I’ve made so far in 2013! My first goal was to have all planning and prep work done by Friday for the following week. Yay! Last week, I finished every.single.thing. on that list. It felt incredible to leave on Friday know I was prepared for this week! It’s only Monday and I’m already almost finished with Tuesday’s to do list. What a great feeling!</p> <p>My second goal was to better organize the way my students hand in their completed written work. I created a system of labeled baskets and switch these throughout the day according to subject area. It has been an amazing transformation! I anticipated a little confusion on my students’ part, but I wasn’t giving my little sweeties nearly enough credit. They caught on right away and even had a little chuckle when I mentioned I needed a new system. Ha! I left school every day last week with all work corrected! What a huge change from having a cluttered pile of papers on my desk with absolutely no rhyme or reason. Again, it’s such a good feeling to leave at the end of the day without that mountain of paperwork weighing on my mind. </p> <p>This week’s goal is to increase positive parent communication. I feel that I communicate with parents rather regularly through both a weekly report card for each student as well as the weekly newsletter I send home. However…I feel that the only parents that receive unplanned notes or phone calls are the ones whose children experience some sort of problem throughout the day. I feel that ALL parents should hear about what their children are doing well throughout the week. I want to start a system in which I can keep track of these notes and phone calls and can tell at a glance who could use a positive note or phone call. Here’s what I came up with:</p> <p><a href="https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B5cB2jWmtsn9cnhWNUkwSmsxWDQ/edit"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto; padding-top: 0px" title="Parent Communication Log" border="0" alt="Parent Communication Log" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-X0SepTSfnaI/UPS3zhkkGII/AAAAAAAABBc/UhXO4TrBRK4/Parent%252520Communication%252520Log%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" width="427" height="561"></a></p> <p>I will keep a new log each week (but I’ll save the old ones so I can refer back to them) to track how and when I communicate with parents. My goal is to improve positive communication with ALL parents. I’ll tally the number of communications I make each week. For each communication I make, I’ll tally whether it was a note or a phone call and whether it was positive or negative. <br />
Hey there! Recently, I was lucky enough to be paired with <a href="http://samplesuperstars.blogspot.com/">Erin Sample of Sample’s Superstars</a> for a product swap. For this swap, Erin was given a copy of my product, <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Digraphs-and-Blends-Literacy-Centers-Bundle-Pack">Digraphs and Blends Literacy Center Bundle Pack</a> (To celebrate this fun swap, it's on sale through Sunday night for an additional 20% off). Click the picture below to check out her blog and her review of my product. Be sure to become a follower of her blog while you’re there. Since I’ve become one of her followers, I’ve even been lucky enough to win one of her giveaways!!!!<br />

As a swap, I was fortunate enough to receive Erin’s fabulous resource, “<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Over-30-Writing-Mini-Lessons-and-Bulletin-Set-Common-Core">Over 30 Writing Mini Lessons and Bulletin Set-Common Core</a>.” Wow! I am so impressed by this packet and by Erin as a teacher/blogger/TPT creator. I had so much fun exploring this A*W*E*S*O*M*E packet!!!<br />
<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Over-30-Writing-Mini-Lessons-and-Bulletin-Set-Common-Core"><img alt="image" border="0" height="265" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-gqLnBUOB47Y/UPC7T0sfFPI/AAAAAAAAA-s/Fys1OXfdZvo/image%25255B4%25255D.png?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="image" width="343" /></a><br />
I chose this packet because vocabulary is a huge focus in my LFS district. I’m always looking for new ways to introduce vocabulary in my classroom. My students certainly lack a variety of vocabulary in their writing and this is the time of year that I really increase my focus on this skill while we're doing kid writing. <br />
I happily downloaded and printed this 124 page packet. As I printed, I noticed that much of this packet focuses on encouraging students to use *sparkle* words. Well you know me, once I saw the word *sparkle*, I was hooked! After printed, I laminated the pages that I just knew would get used many times over by myself and my students. <br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Y3ib6GMBoaQ/UPC7UTOIGqI/AAAAAAAAA-0/qmjlTDLnsrA/s1600-h/003%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="003" border="0" height="313" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-10HM4ADZOpg/UPC7VHwwFmI/AAAAAAAAA-8/toQvC3e-7co/003_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="003" width="405" /></a><br />
Here’s a brief overview of Erin’s packet, directly from her product description: <br />
<em>In this bulletin board set, there are over 30 mini-lesson ideas to use with your students to give them meaningful experiences with vocabulary in order to apply their new learning into writing. The mini lessons use arts integration,literature, writing and even science connections to build vocabulary. <br />There are also many other options if you choose not to make the bulletin board set. You could put the pages into page protectors and make a portable word wall in a binder. You could also put the words and labels on rings. Just make sure the words are accessible to students and they are encouraged to use them.</em> <br />
Erin gives a few ideas for how best to utilize and display these materials. Ultimately, I wish I could display them on a large bulletin board and keep them up all year, but I am limited on classroom wall space, so I decided to three-hole punch all resources and put them in a binder in the order they were in the packet. This orders the resources with the bulletin board materials first, followed by lesson plans and ideas. However, I really like Erin’s idea of making a portable word wall in a binder for students and as I teach these words to my students, I will add them to a second binder to create a portable word wall to be kept at my writing center.<br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8P0DVzVsHs4/UPC7VvuVfpI/AAAAAAAAA_E/I-aKzkB3FCc/s1600-h/001%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="001" border="0" height="288" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-rELBWg676sA/UPC7WapkBiI/AAAAAAAAA_M/Vgpqj35BkEk/001_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="001" width="373" /></a><br />
Erin has organized this packet by the type of words you will focus on teaching your students. These are all called *sparkle* words. Her 15 sub-headings for her sparkle words are color, size, shape, emotion, taste, sound, better than “said,: better than “cool” or “awesome,” smell, touch/texture, made of, pattern, position, time, and action verbs. Because of the wide variety of vocabulary she introduces, this resource is perfect for differentiating for high and low students alike. Students in all primary grades would benefit from this vocabulary instruction. I can think of many of my high-flyers who need to increase the variety of adjectives and verbs they use and at the same time, I need my lower students to simply start adding adjectives to their writing. This packet will help me meet all of their needs. Check out a picture of some of the color and pattern words below. Love these!!!<br />

Not only are the materials to make a bulletin board full of these words included in this pack, but there are mini-lessons for each type of word!!!! I love how Erin included suggestions for authentic children’s literature throughout the mini-lessons. It helped me to quickly see how I could easily tie it into my existing curriculum. She often refers to the way she uses this in her classroom, which makes this pack sooooo user-friendly. The colorful graphics will please the eyes of students and teachers alike. I adore the clip art she chose for the borders and backgrounds. Many of the lessons also include reproducible worksheets and activities for students. Check out some of my faves:<br />

Once I took a chance to really look at this program I realized what a comprehensive unit it is! <br />
A-MAZE-ING! I CANNOT wait to start using this program in my classroom. I will use it year after year as I encourage my littles to expand their writing and speaking vocabulary. I feel that it will really improve my students’ writing and speaking vocabularies. I am so glad I had the opportunity to review this product for Erin. I LOVE her products and will be a loyal blog and TpT follower (and customer)!mollymm77http://www.blogger.com/profile/10749476287356508026noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2002713693103054698.post-44876525621421233502013-01-07T17:03:00.001-08:002013-01-07T17:07:36.521-08:00A Frosty Friends Winner and GO IRISH!!!!!<a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Frosty-Friends-Addition-and-Subtraction-Centers"><img alt="1" border="0" height="470" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Fo2vn_TFbgM/UOtwaCmRYuI/AAAAAAAAA90/J6Ojxj7tMXo/1%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="1" width="354" /></a> We have a winner of my Frosty Friends Addition and Subtraction Math Centers Packet! <a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-rOMmidH9whI/UOtwat2QJHI/AAAAAAAAA98/q5AeKYTUdY8/s1600-h/RNG%2525201-7-13%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img alt="RNG 1-7-13" border="0" height="244" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-PUpg7yB4gDk/UOtwbbW8RJI/AAAAAAAAA-E/4qSDx-AheRk/RNG%2525201-7-13_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="RNG 1-7-13" width="220" /></a> Congratulations to Angie Henry! Last week I was working to improve my planning. This week I am trying to <div align="center">
<span><strong><u>Conquer the Completed Work Chaos</u></strong></span> On my desk, sits a basket of papers the students hand in and it constantly looks like this <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-X2vsAUixV74/UOnFwm6XogI/AAAAAAAAA80/wcQnveCdjsU/s1600-h/004%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img alt="004" border="0" height="327" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-EaP6tFyz1sg/UOnFxNRo1MI/AAAAAAAAA88/rJE1a8ir3bg/004_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="004" width="423" /></a> This is where my students put EVERYTHING! Morning work, notes from home, PTO papers, math papers, center papers, and the list goes on and on. There are at least 100 papers in that baby right now. It is such an annoying pest, staring at me all day long, showing me how much work I have to do!<br />
I’ll be the first to admit that I do give my students a little more written work than some of my colleagues. To hold them accountable, I do like to see and correct most of this work (another difference between my colleagues and I). I believe that if I’m expecting them to do the work, I should take the time to look it over. So instead of only correcting tests and other graded papers, I pretty much collect everything and I don’t plan on changing that any time soon.<br />
So, what’s a girl to do about this cluttery mess on her desk? Well, instead of one basket, I’m upgrading to several *LABELED* baskets. I will have a basket for homework and other notes from home, a basket for reading, a basket for math, and a basket for centers. That will make it easier for me to quickly find what I need and prioritize accordingly. I’m sure it will take a little time for my students to adjust to this new way of handing their work in, but as with all we do, they will learn with practice.<br />
Here are the cute labels I came up with<br />
<a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5cB2jWmtsn9SzcybzNnZVk5M0E"><img alt="Corrected work basket label 1" border="0" height="375" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-E5S2wCaTelA/UOnFxoxOzYI/AAAAAAAAA9E/AcAG9uih0sE/Corrected%252520work%252520basket%252520label%2525201%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="Corrected work basket label 1" width="290" /></a><a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5cB2jWmtsn9SzcybzNnZVk5M0E"><img alt="corrected work basket label 2" border="0" height="385" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEithCrecyum1WQWALivOd2EbmzLoA1CA8GJOWxOlsnGwldelBMFIlJERKj5siC07YGcSvVlnNrx3zaibMAzA9HXX5k4NdpkvUA1Sfw8lXjWJMad0zpDMJAQ29zh2Fq92KP0SBS8YxOsNxXf/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border: 0px currentColor; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="corrected work basket label 2" width="288" /></a><br />
You can click on either picture to head to google docs for your free copy. I left one label blank so you can use it as you choose.<br />
I’m hoping this new way of organizing the many papers I get each day will help me this week. I am going to try to correct all completed work before I leave my classroom each day. I’ll pop back in later in the week to let you know how it’s going.<br />
The font came from <a href="http://www.acupcakefortheteacher.blogspot.com/">http://www.acupcakefortheteacher.blogspot.com</a> That girl has the best FREE fonts around. Check her out!<br />
For the labels, I used clip art from:<br />

The anticipation of going back was way worse. So, if this is your last weekend on break, think positive thoughts and tell yourself you'll be right back in the swing of things the minute you walk through your classroom door. <p>Hopefully you caught my post earlier this week about my resolution to s*p*a*r*k*l*e* in 2013. If not, you can check it out <a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2002713693103054698#editor/target=post;postID=1422170421989308059">here.</a> This week's mission was to get all of my planning and prep work done before I walked out the school door on Friday afternoon. I worked super hard all week to meet this goal and using my fun rainbow checklists made it easier. They also gave me that nice feeling of satisfaction each time I checked off one of my planning chores. If you haven't downloaded your free copy yet, click <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5cB2jWmtsn9cXFkN2pwTUp1SmM">here</a> to head to a blank set and <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B5cB2jWmtsn9eW9PR1V2Q1haMXM">here</a> to go to the personalized set I'm using. <p>So, now for the moment of suspense, did I get all my planning and prep work done? Take a look at my completed checklists below. <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/--Pc8Tnqx9j0/UOgq8GINjLI/AAAAAAAAA4s/DDmkinGm5OI/s1600-h/065%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="065" border="0" alt="065" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-h4fLm2pCdv4/UOgq9GYDF0I/AAAAAAAAA40/4l6coPxChy4/065_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="384" height="303"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgg0RyTWSjQShZFFrxU2xnPQupQYy6M6ph2KjrKNZBrwVeOI6rrNyahBNcjDiIJVSdAu5kr_CcQlWSAF8V0BkwcjpdQAG3l1GGQItKbSpQGWxbLwsLRvQh17E9u0CwMKSo2E5-sBjCXVezd/s1600-h/066%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="066" border="0" alt="066" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-aWlzv2RTb1k/UOgq-TvIHSI/AAAAAAAAA5E/ns4o2ZFhkKE/066_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="383" height="296"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8zXE6iaMC9PIExlf61Y2jbevIpKiTfu7I8NYbGnthMMj1orLmrT7UWsVI8Heuw16DLFDUQvK4bC_lhCcCC0awifmykb7ntnBb9EQNpoGDrduhPAwMUx9h7uApRmjpQhTwFJnwzRwFJp9H/s1600-h/067%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="067" border="0" alt="067" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Kj16rBE2z04/UOgq_72i_xI/AAAAAAAAA5U/nVVIfBEnzW8/067_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="389" height="305"></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-oGalJraDym4/UOgrArZAh2I/AAAAAAAAA5c/vUqFx6kxDw0/s1600-h/068%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="068" border="0" alt="068" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-QJgKbFj9aZo/UOgrBvIRsmI/AAAAAAAAA5k/TC_kC3qUH3c/068_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="394" height="310"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyAHTuvUb2Pxk6YMUySzJ2VqHhDV_9CkG3YQ34-DTKJgzhnvYU9QA4niDAx5HEeiVxSkF3YderzdvgPG9EUtHanf-LpK6nEIGxz5EXuTCJpCQtj5MjDZpLU0RNSC6UhYMWM4xSsykViieV/s1600-h/069%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="069" border="0" alt="069" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-I4oa-yv2-QQ/UOgrDxAsljI/AAAAAAAAA50/xKwHhtR68eA/069_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="397" height="312"></a> <p>So, mission accomplished??? Well, the short answer is no, not quite. That pesky guided reading binder is sitting on my kidney-shaped table with only scattered plans written in it. But here's the long answer. We all know about the long answer right? Don't we all have that one student who has a long answer for everything and somehow avoids saying yes or no? I know you're probably thinking, "Just stick to the facts, ma’am.” But sorry, here's the long answer. The long answer is that I believe I would've gotten that last bit of planning done if we had a full week of school this week. Since we weren't in school on Monday or Tuesday I had to get both of those lists as well as the rest accomplished in 3 short days. So really, if I had those two extra days I'm sure I could've tackled guided reading along of everything else. Let's just say the true test will come next week, when it's a full week, with MAP testing thrown into the mix, DRA's starting, and meetings several days after school. <p>Even though I left school yesterday with guided reading still weighing me down as far as planning goes, I have to say it felt SO GOOD to have everything else ready for next week! Now when I walk into my classroom each day I won't feel overwhelmed with the prep work I need to do for that very day. I can breathe a little and maybe tackle some other projects. <p>Here's a glimpse at some of the activities we did during this short, 3-day week. <p>We made New Year’s resolutions with these cute craftivities. This came from: <a href="http://www.justwildaboutteaching.blogspot.com">www.justwildaboutteaching.blogspot.com</a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-fTgBNeNDcLI/UOgrFP7Wn8I/AAAAAAAAA58/8zKtPR-B7RM/s1600-h/054%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; border-top: 0px; margin-right: auto; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="054" border="0" alt="054" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-EnE3v_dz0TY/UOgrGD87fZI/AAAAAAAAA6E/xekcLvkY-5I/054_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="391" height="302"></a></p> <p>We love using our sparkly star pointers when we’re on a word hunt in our guided reading books. My sweet little guy turned 1, the Mr. and I celebrated our 5th anniversary, I started my 12th year of teaching, and it was my rookie year in bloggy world! Wow, when I get it all out like that it's no wonder that I am exhausted! I tried to enjoy every minute of 2012 and upon reflecting I did have a bit of an epiphany. Being a mommy, wife, teacher, and blogger is HARD WORK! (I'm sure you're thinking, "duh!") It feels like in order to do one of these duties well, the rest get completely ignored. I think I need balance...but I also need to jazz it all up a bit. ` <br />
<br />
Will 2013 be my lucky year? Join me on my quest to balance it all...work, family, blogging. Follow my blog to receive updates and freebies as I embark on this journey to s*p*a*r*k*l*e in all that I do. If you're looking for sparkle, you've come to the right place.<br />
<br />
My first step is to always be prepared. Sounds so simple, especially when technically we start each week with lesson plans. But...do you ever have lesson plans that could've used a little more tweaking? Or do you ever get to school in the morning only to realize that you don't have the copies you need for the day? I'll be honest. This happens to me. Too much.<br />
So, problem-solved. I have a new plan of attack to stay on top of the planning and prep work that goes into teaching. I've created daily, PRETTY checklists that I'll use to keep track of what I need to do to prepare for the following week. My goal is to leave school on Friday afternoon ABSOLUTELY prepared for the following week. Check them out!<br />

I'm glad that the shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating, and ugh-unhealthy eating is behind us...but I am so sad that it will be another year before I get to see my sweet little guy walk downstairs to find what Santa brought for him for being such a good little boy. Am I the only one? <br />
<br />
So now that 2012 is drawing to a close, I thought I'd share some of what we've done in my classroom lately, but I've neglected to share with you all. I am, here and now, making a resolution to TAKE MORE PICTURES! It's so hard when I'm there to teach and not to capture every moment in a photo, ha! But, I'm going to find a way to work daily picture taking into the routine.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's our Christmas bulletin board.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTwYWuIYKR6eqPWhyphenhyphenf19Rq39SI82voVhf-88jYBn5NLOK5x1L96stZFCo_d3pC85iW-KyZMzmaenncZEGyQyuBtzooZzX_NA0Jjpi04EEslu6oWXlbdoJaeO6ejAASLJbbIrPntHdu_3X/s1600/016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="380" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBTwYWuIYKR6eqPWhyphenhyphenf19Rq39SI82voVhf-88jYBn5NLOK5x1L96stZFCo_d3pC85iW-KyZMzmaenncZEGyQyuBtzooZzX_NA0Jjpi04EEslu6oWXlbdoJaeO6ejAASLJbbIrPntHdu_3X/s640/016.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
If the title of the bulletin board doesn't make it obvious, we were learning about l blends and s blends when we made these sleds. We brainstormed a list of sl words together on chart paper and the kiddos had to write words with sl blends on top of each gift on their sled.<br />
